Libera Me
Gabriel Fauré  (Medium Difficult) (Shareware Music - $40.00 fee)

O’Carroll Music Publishers is pleased to offer "Libera Me" from the famous Requiem by Gabriel Fauré.  The piece was arranged for St James's Band, Dublin when the arranger was their Musical Director.  The voice Solo sung by the Bass in the original is here taken by a solo Euphonium with trombones joining half way through the section.  The middle 6/4 section uses the Horns and Alto saxophones in the rhythmical fanfare while the upper winds and trumpets carry the top line with Bassoons, Euphonium and Basses carrying the bass melody. Although there was an effort to stick closely to the original, some liberties (no pun intended!) have been taken by the arranger.  The most obvious of these is the inclusion of percussion.  While the Snare Drum, Cymbals and Tubular bell do play very sparsely, the Bass Drum plays a major part in the 2/2 sections.  The only other liberty taken by the arranger is the introduction of a more coloured harmony in the lead up to the recapitulation.
Performance time- approximately 4 minutes.

Capricious Celts
Fergus O'Carroll  (Difficult) (Shareware Music - $60.00 fee)
This piece, written by Fergus O'Carroll, is a whimsical look at the celtic culture in the 21st century.  It tries to be "up-to-date" whilst still maintaining its' celtic flavour.  Not to be taken too seriously, it makes for the perfect encore piece at four minutes long.  It has been recorded by the Irish Police Force Band and performed in an orchestral transcription by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland.  speaker.gif (159 bytes)

Murphs March
  Ron Follas (Medium)
Murph's March is dedicated to Charles Murph, long-time band director in Greensboro, NC and former conductor of the Greensboro Concert Band. This march is in the standard march format of two contrasting strains and a Trio but is highly influenced by jazz in its melodic and harmonic structure (but not rhythmically). Written in 1982, the orchestra version has found a permanent home in the repertoire of several professional orchestras and the band version is popular among conductors, musicians and audiences speaker.gif (159 bytes) mp3.gif (301 bytes) mp3.gif (301 bytes)

Monuments  Ron Follas  (Medium)

Monuments was commissioned by and written for the Loudoun (VA) Concert Band, Mark Norman, director, and was premiered by that group on March 29, 1997.  MONUMENTS does not depict those huge statues and other shrines so often associated with great victories and momentous events. Rather, this work depicts the memorials to the solemn and painful realities of war: Monuments such as those found in Civil War prison cemeteries commemorating those soldiers and sailors who survived battle but died of disease and starvation; the quiet reverence of Arlington; the Balls Bluff, VA Cemetery; the soldier's and sailor's Memorial in Nantucket; the Confederate Monument in Salisbury, NC.

Opening with bugles playing over a quiet cemetery, a solemn mood is set. A cornet plays an Irish melody which might have been heard in the evening in any Civil War camp, then is joined by the camp band. A battle follows and the finale is announced by a quiet retrograde of the cornet solo.  MONUMENTS ends with the fallen warriors being taken up to heaven. (Notes written by the composer)

Union Pines
Ron Follas  (Medium)
Union Pines was written for the Union Pines (NC) High School Band, David Seiberling, conductor. Contrasting slow and fast sections emphasise the wide palate of colours a band can produce. Solos for flute, piccolo, clarinet, horn and percussion make this a showpiece for the above average band.  mp3.gif (301 bytes) mp3.gif (301 bytes)

Breakstone Ron Follas  (Medium)  (Shareware Music - $50.00 fee)
Breakstone is a concert overture in two contrasting parts. Opening with a Gregorian chant-like melody played by a solo flute, the slow section of BREAKSTONE includes solos for trumpet, trombone, oboe, F Horn, piccolo and alto saxophone as well as rich, full sections for the entire band. While the opening melody is in Mixolydian mode, the primary melody of the faster second section is in Lydian mode. This melody is first stated by the trumpets with percussion, then by the low winds and low brass. Following a saxophone quartet and a restatement of the Lydian theme the brass section majestically plays the opening theme alternating with fast, tutti sections and BREAKSTONE ends with an exciting, dramatic gesture. A Wexford Rhapsody
T.C. Kelly (
Medium Difficult)
A Wexford Rhapsody by T C Kelly for Concert Band is a major contribution to the Irish band repertoire. Not as difficult technically as it is musically, this piece is a challenging and satisfying suite. While it was written in the 50's, it has the potential to be as popular as Grundman's Irish Rhapsody and is the type of piece that O C M P was set up to preserve. A Brass Band transcription by Victor Malirsh is in preparation which will allow Massed Band performances. Intermediate to Advanced speaker.gif (159 bytes)

Soundshock
Eilbhlís Farrell
Soundshock evokes the spirit of the late 16th century polychoral antiphonal style where sonority and the exploration of instrumental colour contrast became a vital structural element. It highlights the unique sound of the different sections of the Concert Band and the use of Timpani and unpitched percussion throughout forms an important structural, unifying function. The Bass Drum ostinato patterns are reminiscent of the force and power of the lambeg drum, a sound very strongly etched into my early soundworld. Soundshock is a work of affirmation and a coalescing of elements of old and new. It is an overture celebrating the new Dublin Institute of Technology. (Notes by the composer, Eilbhlís Farrell)

Clan O'Neill
 Fergus O'Carroll
Clan O'Neill is a piece of Irish Music which was written for a French Horn playing colleague, on the occasion of his marriage. The first performance took place at their wedding on the 26 March 1997 in Dublin and was played by the Horn Section of the NSOI. The piece, although originally conceived for Horn Quintet, translates well for other ensembles and this transcription by the composer is for Concert Band. As the bride of the piece was English and the groom Irish, the piece parodies the absolute sensibility of the English in contrast to the gay abandon of the Irish.
