| At present, OCMP uses three types of sound files. Each
one has different attributes so we will deal with each, one by one. Midi Files.
Midi files are the smallest and easiest files to use. Just click on the file and
your computer media player should start playing the file. If not, check the
following options:
Does your media player software start? if so, are your speakers turned on and is your
computer volume turned up (I know, I know but you wouldn't believe how often.....).
Also, make sure that the Midi option is checked in the preferences of your browser. Click
on the icon above to check (file size 4 kb). This is the tune you should have heard when
you entered the OCMP site. OCMP uses the General Midi settings where possible and playback
can vary from computer to computer and from soundcard to soundcard.
MP3
Files. These files are a lot larger than the Midi files (up to 500 kbs) but they are
real performances. The vast majority of our MP3 samples are played by non
professional musicians in non controlled situations but they give a true impression of the
pieces. In order to hear these files, you need an MP3 player. These are available
all over the net (and on most coverdisks) such is the popularity of the format and
you should find a number of free ones at www.tucows.com
. We have kept the quality of the files low in order to reduce the file size but
they are, in our opinion, a worthwhile addition to the site. Why not compare this
format with the midi format in the previous paragraph by clicking on the MP3 icon above
(file size 426 kb). Again, if there are problems, check your hardware and if all is ok,
download a file from elsewhere on the net. If that works and OCMP files don't,
please email us.
Sibelius Scorch Files.
These files are unique in that you can hear a Midi representation and at the same time,
see a scrolling version of the sheet music. These files are very small
but you need the Scorch Plugin in order to see them. This is
available as a free download from www.sibelius.com
and you'll find the link on the left of the home page. Having downloaded the
plugin,
install it and then you must RESTART YOUR BROWSER before the plugin works for the first
time. If all goes according to plan, you can view, transpose, fast forward and
rewind the music. If you need help, please email OCMP
